Helias Doundoulakis, seen here a few years ago at his family’s beloved vineyard in Archanes, Crete. The German hospital’s foundation remains today as a base for the worker’s shed and as a platform to dry grapes, producing raisins. It was here, on May 20, 1941, that German planes mistook Helias and his father Dimitrios for soldiers on the opening day of the Battle of Crete, narrowly surviving. Nearby is the ancient Minoan excavation site — Knossos.
I am 91 years old, a veteran of WWII, where I served in the U.S. Army as part of the U.S. Army Forces in the Middle East, or (USAFIME), and the Office of Strategic Services, the OSS. This is my third book I have written, this time with the help of Gabriella Gafni. I hope you enjoy my memoirs as much as I did writing, "Trained to be an OSS Spy."
